The first operating grade for locomotive crew is shunter, and the syllabus this covers both what must be known and what can be done.
For passenger guards there is a syllabus to define what they need to know of the rules and regulations that relate to operating trains.
For diesel locomotive second men there is a syllabus to define what they need to know of the rules and regulations that relate to operating trains.
For steam locomotive firemen there is a syllabus to define what they need to know of the rules and regulations that relate to operating trains
