Medical Assessments

Working members will be aware that the train operating regulations impose various requirements for medical assessments, and for keeping up-to-date the information on which these assessments are based.  One of these requirements is that, before starting to train for any train operating duty, you need to complete a medical self-assessment questionnaire.  The other is that, if you develop any disability or other medical condition which may affect your ability to carry out any such duty, then you need to notify the medical officer.

To help you comply with the first of these requirements, a copy of the medical self-assessment questionnaire has been made available here, and you can download a copy (as a pdf file) by clicking on the link below.

To help you comply with the second of these requirements, a medical contact form has been created, and you can download a copy (as a pdf file) by clicking on the link below.

In each case, when you have completed the form, you should put it in a sealed envelope, addressed either to Dr C E Roberts or simply Medical Officer, care of the railway. Please also write on the back of the envelope “From” followed by your name.

You should then either give the envelope directly to either Steve or Ann Roberts, or ask the shop staff to put the envelope in the internal mailbox for the medical officer.  It will then be forwarded on to Dr Roberts.  If she needs to reply directly to you, for instance if she needs to ask for any further details, she would normally do so by email.

Practical Assessment Procedures

Medical assessments are normally done by the railway's appointed medical examiner, Dr. D'Allara, but there are two situations where it may be appropriate for railway staff to conduct practical assessments of medical aspects.

One of these medically-related aspects is hearing, and practical assessments of this may be needed for railway staff who have to wear hearing aids.  The railway has devised a procedure for conducting such an assessment, and you can download a copy of this procedure (as a pdf file) by clicking on the link below.

The other medically-related aspect is colour vision, and practical assessments of this may be needed for railway staff who are not able to pass the full medical test for adequate colour vision.  The railway has devised a procedure for conducting such an assessment (sometimes known as "a flag-waving test", and you can download a copy of this procedure (as a pdf file) by clicking on the link below.
